Be Energy Efficient This Spring!

Spring is here and since temperatures are changing, your home’s energy needs are changing too. Springs in the mid-Atlantic are typically the best weather we get all year, so it is a great time of year to save money on your energy usage. Not only will you be saving lots of money, but you will also be helping the planet out. Only use what you need this spring, and we will also give you some basic tips on how to prepare your home to be more energy efficient this spring season.

energy efficient

Have an energy efficient home by following these simple tips.

Seal Air Leaks

One way that your home wastes a lot of energy is by losing cold or warm air through air leaks! Early this spring, it is bound to still be chilly, so you probably will not be opening up your windows yet. You need to keep the inside of your home warmer than the outdoors, but you do not need to crank up your heat to do so. Inspect your house for any air leaks, which can cost you and your family money on your monthly utility bill. Be sure to check extra carefully around windows and doors. Seal any leaks with caulking or weather strips.

Upgrade and Replace

A great way to ensure your home is energy efficient is to upgrade and replace any old fixtures in your house if you have the money to do so. Investing some money up front will save you even more cash in the long run. If sealing old, leaky windows is not enough to keep air from coming in or out, consider replacing them with new, energy-efficient windows. Upgrade the frame to vinyl, which can reduce heat transfer. Invest in double-paned windows to reduce the flow of heat out of your home. Old appliances can also suck up a great portion of your utility bill. Replace old washers and dryers with new, energy efficient one. Stop wasting energy and save your hard-earned money!

Replace Air Filters

While you are getting your spring cleaning done, do not forget to replace your old air filters. Over the year, they get clogged with dirt and debris which cause your heating and cooling systems to work less efficiently than they normally would. If you have a big house, make sure to change your air filter once every season, so you do not have to work your heating and cooling systems to death.

Don’t Touch the Thermostat

Spring temperatures are relatively comfortable compared to the rest of the year. Resist the urge to fiddle with your thermostat! Enjoy the crisp spring air inside and outside of your home.
