Fall Home Maintenance Tips

Practice these maintenance tips this coming fall.

Summer is drawing to a close and cool fall days and pumpkin flavored everything are right around the corner. This also means that the daylight hours when you can get stuff done are getting shorter and you will have less time to work on home maintenance. Here are some things to take care of around the house now, as we race towards fall and winter.

Trim Trees and Shrubs

Prune any dead limbs out of your trees and shrubs so that they don’t become a hazard during the storms we are likely to have in the fall and winter. If you’re not sure how to prune your trees safely, consider having a professional come out. An arborist can also spot any signs of disease before you would.

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Now is a good time to make sure that your gutters and downspouts are clear. As the leaves begin falling, they will likely accumulate more debris, but it is best that they be clear to start with. A gutter that is already clogged will only get worse with fallen leaves and that could end in disaster.

Make Repairs

Now is a great time to take a survey of your property looking for anything in need of repairs. Look for signs of damage in the roof, siding, and foundation and schedule repairs before the weather turns bad.  This is also a good time to look for any cracks or holes that might allow animals into your home. Seal them up now before the bad weather drives the critters into warm and dry areas (like your basement).

Give Hardscaping a Pre-winter Check

Checkout your hardscaping to make sure it is all in good shape before winter weather hits.  Check that your driveway and paths are in good shape to make shoveling easier. Check that railings are sturdy and provide good support. Finally, check that the stairs are all solid to stand up to ice, snow, and salt this winter.

Store Away Summer Stuff

As we move away from the heat of summer, it is a good time to clean and store those summer supplies. Turn off any outdoor faucets and drain and put away hoses. Remove window A/C units and clean them before storing them for the winter, or if you have to leave them in clean them and cover the exterior of the unit with an insulating wrap. Finally, empty and clean outdoor toys like sand tables or splash pools.
